Do Reef Livestock Prices Actually Move? We Measured.

128,000+ listing-day observations say online reef prices are far stickier than hobby folklore suggests — and when they do move, it's an event, not a drift.

Published July 29, 2026 · figures recomputed from data through September 4, 2026 · by Reef Price Index

Hobby folklore says livestock prices swing constantly — wait for a dip, prices spike in summer, that vendor just raised everything. Because this index re-reads the complete public catalogs of 4 major online reef vendors every day, we can test that belief directly, at the level of individual listings.

The test is strict on purpose: we follow each specific listing (the same vendor, the same product variant) from one daily snapshot to the next and count only genuine repricings — a numeric price becoming a different numeric price. A listing going in or out of stock is tracked separately; a median wobbling because the in-stock mix changed doesn't count. Nothing here is survey data or vendor claims.

The result: prices barely move

Since July 13, 2026 we've made 392,048 day-over-day comparisons of individual livestock listings. The price changed in 8341 of them — a move rate of 2.13%. Put differently: on a typical day, more than 99 out of 100 reef livestock listings cost exactly what they cost yesterday. Of the moves that did happen, 60% were price cuts rather than increases.

When prices do move, it's an event

The moves we caught are not gentle market drift. They cluster hard: the three busiest days account for 74% of every repricing we've observed (August 20, 2026: 2181, August 16, 2026: 2013, September 4, 2026: 1975). And they cluster by vendor — Top Shelf Aquatics alone accounts for 95% of all moves. What that pattern describes is a store running a promotion: one vendor repricing a slice of its catalog on one day, then everything holding still again.

What moves constantly: stock, not price

Over the same window we counted 4,926 availability flips — a listing going in or out of stock — versus 8341 repricings. Stock status changes about 0.6× as often as price does. That matches how this corner of retail actually works: much of the inventory is WYSIWYG (one physical coral per listing), so a sale removes the listing rather than moving its price. The market's real volatility is in what's available, not what it costs.

Honest limits of this measurement

This window covers 54 days in midsummer, four vendors, and online listings only. Seasonal resets (new collection seasons, holiday promotions) may move prices in ways a July window can't see; local fish stores may behave entirely differently. We'll keep publishing updates as the dataset grows — every number on this page recomputes automatically from the latest data.

Method, in one line: every figure above is computed from our daily snapshots of the complete public catalogs of the vendors we track — nothing is estimated, surveyed, or quoted from other sites. Details in the methodology. Spotted something that looks wrong? Tell us and we'll check it against the underlying snapshots.
