Reading today's numbers
Today's 14 in-stock listings span $34.99 to $250.00 — the high end is 7.1× the low. That kind of gap is normal for corals: this row groups every listing of the type at genus level, so a small frag of a common color morph and a high-grade named strain or larger colony land in the same range. The $69.50 median is the fairest single benchmark: half of those listings sit at or below it.

Stable water chemistry does more for a newly added coral than anything else — salinity, alkalinity and calcium held steady while it settles in and colors up. Chewy — a general pet retailer that sells no live coral or marine fish, and is not one of the vendors this index tracks — carries reef salt mixes, saltwater test kits, marine fish food, and coral and invertebrate food.
